There is a legend that Kofu was a lake; when the Kofu Basin was once a lake, the two gods gathered together to reclaim the mountain, pour the water to the current Fujikawa River and create lands for the people to live and cultivate. This is how current Kofu city was created.
This legend is written in numerous documents and the shrines and the temples in the city remain the tradition.
“Anagiri-Daijinja Shrine” enshrines the one of the gods who created the Kofu Basin from the bottom of the lake into a rich and beautiful land.
“Anagiri-Daijinja Shrine” is located in the middle of a residential area of the town center. People visit there for various events such as New Year’s celebration, a festival of children’s healthy growth of three, five and seven years of age nowadays.
After going through the gate of the shrine along the path, there is another gate called ‘Zuijin-mon’, which is designated as a cultural property of Kofu city. ‘Zuijin-mon’ is a gate that enshrines the god who prevents evil things to enter the premises.
Going through the ‘Zuijin-mon’ and walk through the premises, you will find a hall of worship in front, a beautiful decorative sculpture behind it and a colorful main shrine will catch your eyes.
